description: Behavioral Health Interpreting
Behavioral
Health Interpreting Medical
interpreters encounter special challenges
when interpreting for the mental
health encounter. Mental health
clinicians use different assessment
strategies than their medical colleagues,
and the interpreter may be asked
to use different communication strategies
as well. Issues of privacy, the
emotional nature of the content
of a mental health encounter, and
the powerful experience of witnessing
another’s deeply personal
issues may test the interpreter’s
ability to remain unbiased.
This program introduces the medical
interpreter to key concepts in mental
health assessment and treatment.
The following topics are examined:
- Introduction of key concepts
used in assessment and diagnosis
- Fundamental issues in medical
interpreting for psychological

- Discussion around issues in
