Sample program description: Behavioral Health Interpreting

Behavioral Health Interpreting

Medical interpreters encounter special challenges when interpreting for the mental health encounter. Mental health clinicians use different assessment strategies than their medical colleagues, and the interpreter may be asked to use different communication strategies as well. Issues of privacy, the emotional nature of the content of a mental health encounter, and the powerful experience of witnessing another’s deeply personal issues may test the interpreter’s ability to remain unbiased.

This program introduces the medical interpreter to key concepts in mental health assessment and treatment. The following topics are examined:

  • Introduction of key concepts used in assessment and diagnosis
  • Fundamental issues in medical interpreting for psychological testing
  • Discussion around issues in interpreting for the psychotherapy visit with adults and with children
  • Discussion around issues involved in interpreting for psychological assessments of dangerousness, especially suicidality and assaultiveness
Content-rich materials included with all programs.
