What Does a Trainer Do?

Culturesmart’s Essential Piece curriculum has two elements, so we offer three tracks for trainers:

  • Lead trainers learn to deliver “foundation” course training, in English, on ethics, skills, standards of practice, and other aspects of interpreting.
  • Language coaches are trained for work with language-specific groups, covering difficult vocabulary and role plays that reinforce skills.
  • Some individuals serve as lead trainers and language coaches so attend a combined train-the-trainer course.

We developed manuals to guide new and experienced trainers through delivery of our foundation course and language coaching sessions. Although all trainers must cover standard Essential Piece elements when they lead courses, our guidebooks encourage individuality among trainers.

Who Should Attend?

Culturesmart accepts highly talented and qualified individuals for our train-the-trainer courses. Most successful candidates have completed facilitation skills training. Most have also attended our Essential Piece training.

We examine 10 criteria using a proprietary scoring system that evaluates many other factors in trainer candidates, including:

  • medical interpreting experience
  • academic background
  • training experience, including medical interpreting training
  • medical training
